Net zero energy building by Arte Charpentier Architects

This Net zero energy building is design by Arte Charpentier Architects. For most sustainability-minded architects, a net zero energy building is the holy grail. But Elithis Tower, located in Dijon, France, has surpassed the net zero energy ideal to become the first energy positive office building, meaning it creates more power than it uses. Elithis Tower also houses 330 rooftop solar panels and a solar shield to remove excess heat while allowing natural light to filter in. With a price comparable to that of a traditionally-built structure, Elithis Tower is leading the way in affordable green building.

Beautiful Bamboo Construction by De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop

The Mason Lane Farm Operations Facility in North Carolina is just such an example. Designed by De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop out of Louisville, KY, the beautiful eco farm facility supports 2,000 acres of agriculture, recreation, wildlife habitat and conservation land as part of the University of North Carolina. Two barns were designed and constructed on a well planned site using sustainable materials like locally-sourced bamboo and prefab panels and trusses.

Two barns, “A” and “B” operate side by side but serve different purposes. Barn A acts as a work facility and is insulated to keep workers protected and warm, while Barn B is an open air shed, covered to protect equipment and store hay. The site of the barns was designed to maximize space while providing air circulation and accessibility for large farm equipment. Barn A is clad in corrugated metal and serves as the operations office and workspace for the farm. The interior is modern, simple, and architecturally pleasing, incorporating finish screws, metal ties and varying materials as design elements. Architecturally, the barn is symmetrically appealing and incredibly practical.

Vertical Village by Graft Lab

The architects at Graft Lab (also responsible for the unique and ethereal Bird Island) must have been taking good notes in their LEED classes because the Vertical Village incorporates the most basic mantras of energy-efficiency in hot climates: reducing solar gain and maximizing solar production. Each hockey-stick-shaped building within the village is self-shading on its north side and on the east-west axis to reduce long-angle sun penetration. A massive bed of solar collectors lies at the south end of the complex and has the ability to automatically position itself toward the sun to maximize solar-energy aggregation. Aside from its energy-harvesting features, the Vertical Village is also quite breathtaking to behold.

The idea of a wooden house from Bates Masi

This house design is really great idea from Bates Masi. Most children dream of a tree house.Adults however know the feeling of comfort which is why for most of them the idea of spending hours and hours in a wooden “box” hung in a tree is not all that attractive. Here’s where Bates Masi comes in with this ingenious tree-house equipped with all the utilities and accessories a normal, “ground-placed” house has.

All the rooms have a rustic touch but they are very well individualized, meaning that you can absolutely tell the difference between the bedroom and living-room fore example. Moreover, the place has balconies from where to enjoy a breath of fresh air and admire the view.

Contemporary Living Space: Notting Hill House

Designed by Staffan Tollgard Design Group, Notting Hill House was a traditional terraced house in Notting Hill that right now is a contemporary living space. The well-balanced use of natural and man-made materials creates a tactile journey through the ground floors harder ‘public’ areas up to the higher private floors where the couple that owns the house can escape a busy city lifestyle. Here are a few more words about this project from Staffan Tollgard Design Group.

Our clients asked us to create a seamless, contemporary living space for an elegant lifestyle. They asked for a bold design statement that would immediately welcome their guests. We achieved this by pushing the ground floor open to its practical limits – the only door other than the entrance is the one to the cloakroom. They wanted to multitask in this open, ‘public’, space without compromising their entertaining duties. Thus the kitchen has become an integrated element of the living space; the island, with its bar area, provides a gathering point for both the guests and the host who can continue cooking without leaving the party. The garden effortlessly becomes part of this borderless ground-floor space through our addition of three-metre wide folding sliding doors. Materials link the outside with the inside: the stone-clad wall behind the dining table speaks to the more public nature of this entertaining space as well as to the garden beyond.

The streamlined sleek elegance of the ground floor continues to underpin the design of the more private upper floors and the transitional space of the staircase that leads to them. The lounge and study area on the first floor are less minimalist, softer spaces but remain architecturally connected to the more contemporary and ‘public’ ground floor. The combination of the original architectural elements (cornices and high skirting boards), with the more contemporary finishes of the furniture represents a logical evolution of the statement the clients wished to make. The subtle colour palette is another layer in the creation of a calm and relaxing area for catching up with work or with after party guests.
